We're often asked how long a person needs to train for triathlons,  That answer always depends.

  • What's your fitness level? 
  • Have you ever trained for a triathlon before?  
  • Are you a raw beginner or someone more experienced?  

If you're already triathlon fit and have been training for a long time, these numbers may be different. This is a very general guideline and of course, there will be exceptions. This is also based on the belief that people asking as total beginners, are performing the right training during these months. 

The numbers are listed in months.

Finish means simply cross the line. 

Finish feeling strong means finish feeling like you were in control of the race, not the other way around.  

Compete means finish competitively, perhaps winning an age group or a qualifying spot to another race.
